FAQs Part II: So You Want To Be My Assistant?

I’ve been receiving numerous emails lately from aspiring artists who would like to follow me along on jobs, clean my brushes, etc. I do use assistants for select bookings but I am extremely particular with the assistants I choose. If you are an artist interested in assisting me, I do have a few suggestions on how to go about that.

Tips for inquiring about assistant jobs via Email

Submitting your information via Email is my preferred way of introduction. However, the information I’ve been receiving from aspiring artists lately in emails has been next to nothing. For example, simply telling me you would like to assist me with no background on yourself, portfolio, or even your last name included in the Email is unacceptable.

If you would like to submit your information to me via Email, please send me your full name and contact information along with a resume in a Word Doc or within the body of the Email. Please include your objective in your resume. If you are interested in mainly print jobs or TV, please state that. I’d also like to know your experience, if any. Visuals are important to me as well. Please be sure to include samples of your work in your email. I prefer a website link but if you attach samples to the Email, that is acceptable.

Am I currently taking on makeup assistants?

I always keep my eye out for talented individuals to assist me on various bookings. All complete information I receive from artists is kept on file for future bookings.

I do not have any full-time work available, just freelance work.

Do I provide makeup training for artists?

Currently I am not providing any one on one makeup training for artists – paid/unpaid/trade, etc. Those I choose as assistants will be trained personally by me before working any jobs with me.

Will I provide mentoring via Email or phone?

I am able to provide mentoring over Email, which is my preferred method of contact. I can make suggestions or answer makeup related questions as my schedule allows only by Email.

Thank you for your interest in my work

I would like to take a moment to thank all of you who have sent Emails inquiring more information about me and my work. Sometimes these Emails are a bit overwhelming but I do appreciate them. This is a tough business, especially when the economy declines. And, as I’ve stated before, starting ANY business is a long, hard road complete with blood, sweat, and tears. It is not for everyone but those who are talented, know how to market their trade, and are compassionate towards others will be the few who do succeed.

Best Wishes!!
