Bumpits: Do They Really Work?

bumpitsWe’ve all seen the infomercial at 2:00AM advertising big hair in minutes through a revolutionary piece of hardware conveniently named Bumpits. But do they really work? How do they stay in place? I’ve got the answer to your burning questions…

First off, yes they do work and quite nicely. They are easy to use when hair is styled around the insert properly. Below are my tips to securing your “bumped up” style!

1) Section hair at the crown of your head.

2) Tease the section of hair at the root just behind, not in front, of the section.

3) Tease the section of hair just below the first section on the top at the root.

4) Spray the roots of both sections with hairspray. I like LOREAL’S Elnett Satin Hairspray.

5) Place the Bumpit at the root in between both sections of hair.  The Bumpit has tiny edges around the base that grip hair.  For extra security, place one bobby pin at the base of the Bumpit in the middle and point the bobby pin downward- not upward through the hair because it would show through.

6) Style hair around the Bumpit using a Mason Pearson Brush, or an equivalent style of brush made to smooth hair.  Spray with hairspray to set the style.

Although this video tutorial is showing you how to do a soft smokey eye, I am wearing the medium sized Bumpit in my hair. :)

4 Top Makeup Artist Backstage Product Finds of 2009

It’s been a fabulous year of beauty!  I’ve attended, and presented at, The Artist Summit Miami and Chicago, attended The Makeup Show NYC, worked and interviewed backstage at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York and shared product recommendations with national magazines such as Real Simple Magazine and Women’s Health Magazine.

Through these experiences, I’ve come across a variety of beauty products (as you can imagine!).  This was a tough job but I’ve compiled a list of my 4 top beauty product must-have picks of 2009!

Drum roll, please…..

Freedom Glow Blush#4: Revolution Organics Freedom Glow Balm in Blush - A beautiful and natural flushed color perfect on any skin tone. Apply anywhere on the face and blend with fingers, a sponge, or foundation brush for a healthy glow.

LisaHoffmanSpaFacial8#3: Lisa Hoffman Spa Facial Lip Moisturizer 8 – My obsession and now a kit staple, this lip moisturizer does it all by smoothing lips and finishing with a semi-gloss shine, not sticky.

reversital#2: Reversital 3-in-1 MicrodermaStick - There’s nothing better than Microdermabrasion at your fingertips! This is another staple in my kit for on-the-go exfoliation for clients before a makeup application. Quick and easy to use! The product comes in stick form, twist the product up and out of the tube, gently rub face, neck, and chest in a circular motion with the product and rinse! Simple as that!

AND THE #1 SPOT GOES TO……

occliptar#1 OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE COSMETICS LIP TAR - A tiny dab of this lipstick/liquid product can coat your lips within seconds. Highly pigmented and long lasting. The finish is demi-matte but you can coat with a clear gloss. Perfect for an event, photo shoot, or just to wear everyday. Comes in a variety of beautiful shades!

Brittany Murphy Got Me Through High School

brittanymurphy cluelessEvery girl I know has been there before– the dreaded teen years.  For me, I was a gawky kid complete with braces and permed hair that was dyed a different color almost weekly (including pink Kool-Aid).  I tried it all because, of course, I wanted to be the pretty girl in school.  I aimed for Alicia Silverstone’s character in the movie Clueless but my look more resembled Brittany Murphy’s character, Tai.

Tai was the kid that most girls in high school turned their noses up at.  Daily, she wore ripped jeans, muddy red hair, and a flannel to match.  I was Tai.  I was the girl that hung out with the boys and made fun of the popular girls.  But deep down inside I wanted to be a popular girl.  Silverstone’s character Cher gave Tai a chance at popularity.  First came the makeover, which had to be my favorite scene in the entire movie.  Cher, and her friend Dionne, stripped that muddy red color out of Tai’s hair to reveal a more natural brown shade.  Then came the mascara, blush and lipstick!  Finally, the outfit and Tai was complete.  A debutant unveiling of sorts lead off the next scene and Tai was a hit at high school– virtually saving her from teenage hell!  brittanymurphy tai makeover

I know it sounds absolutely ridiculous but this scene gave me hope.  Hope for my future.  Hope that I would eventually learn how to wear my hair and makeup properly and pick out a smashing outfit for my body type.  Mission accomplished.  And now, even better, I have the knowledge and products to rescue girls like Tai!

If Brittany Murphy has taught me anything, it’s that regular girls can make a big hit– given the right beauty products and fashion!

brittanymurphy as taiBrittany, you will be missed.

This beautiful story was submitted to Makeup Artist Backstage by fashion photographer, Tomaas.   Immediately I took to the images, loving the lines, style, and of course the make-up.  There is drama throughout but the structured design on the face is perfected with a clean technique, leaving the skin soft and fresh– love.

New Moon: Makeup Prep with Dermalogica Products

new moonFor my beauty fanatics out there who are also New Moon groupies, this one is for you!

Dermalogica is VERY excited to be a favorite brand from the New Moon cast. On the set of the latest filming, Twilight: New Moon Makeup Designer Norma Hill-Patton (at THEY Representation – www.THEYrep.com) routinely used the products to create the best canvas for dressing up the vampires and werewolves. Long days on set can take a toll on actor’s skin so Hill-Patton turned to Dermalogica products to prep skin before makeup.

“All of the Actors required a LOT of make up and it was on their faces for long periods of time, so we needed to take particular care of their skins. Vampires don’t perspire, don’t grow facial hair, don’t get lines and certainly don’t get BLEMISHES” explains Norma Hill-Patton, Makeup Designer for Twilight: New Moon. “We loved Dermalogica’s Active Moist which we used on most of the Cast as it is quite universal and suits most types of skin. The Pre Cleanse was invaluable for cleansing off the body make up, especially because we had to apply a make up fixative and it was difficult to remove. But we didn’t want anything that was harsh or might induce a reaction. The Intensive Eye Cream was great for keeping the fine lines around the eyes at bay. A TINY amount patted under the eye for final checks (on top of the make up) did wonders to diminish the lines for close ups.” Hill-Patton concludes, “The Shaving Regime was used on all of the guys with great success! Again, it was really important to be sympathetic to their skins as they had to have a REALLY CLOSE shave. I’m a great fan of the shaving oil and it can be used for ‘wet’ shaves or electric shaves! We even had to shave some of them in the middle of the day to maintain the smooth look to their skin! I also loved the Renewal Lip Complex to keep their lips smooth during the cold, windy days during exterior filming.”

specialclearingbooster

Dermalogica Special Clearing Booster

During New York Fashion Week in September of 2008, I met with representatives from Dermalogica who shared with me information about television stations and film crews turning to their products in the hi-definition world. Gone are the days of heavy pancake makeup as skin care is where its at! As a professional makeup artist, I can relate. A clean look starts with clean skin.

“My daily regimen includes Dermalogica sunscreen. They also have a really great “special clearing booster” for spot treatment on blemishes” says Ashley Greene, “Alice Cullen”. I was given a sample of the Special Clearing Booster during my visit with reps from Dermalogica and I agree, this stuff is good! “It’s a little more involved on set with hot towel treatments and Dermalogica pre-cleanse to get all that white makeup off” explains Greene.
