Diane Kruger: Red Carpt Updo Style by Richard Marin

DianeKruger1Diane Kruger lit up the red carpet recently with this modern day twist on a classic Hollywood style.  Personally I love the softness of this style.  It’s finished and unfinished but, at the same time, maintains its elegance.   Her hairstylist, Richard Marin, gave me the scoop on four simple steps to re-create this holiday hair DO at home.DianeKruger2

  1. Dry hair with head tilted forward using an ionic dryer for maximum shine and volume (try the Remington Professional Dryer).
  2. Part hair to side.  Using a one inch barrel curling iron, section hair in pieces that are 1½ inches by 3 inches wide. Curl in one direction for a uniform wave pattern, and let curls cool to set.
  3. Brush hair out in a downward motion. Keep brush close to scalp, and finger waves will form.  Brush waves to one side, and secure in side ponytail.
  4. Roll hair into smooth bun with the ends poking out, and pin into place.  Finish with a touch of hairspray and bit of shine spray.  To glam it up like Diane, add a sparkly hair accessory.

The Remington Professional line includes a dryer, one-inch flat iron and two-inch flat iron.

Available exclusively at Walmart; $50 each.

Wedding Makeup: All Aboard Smoky Eyes

Sultry, smoky eyes are my signature look.  Since a teenager, I’ve been intrigued with enhancing eyes.  Maybe because its the first thing guys look at–  trust me ladies, it’s the truth!

For a recent shoot with one of Washingtonian’s top pics for wedding photography, Genevieve Leiper and I collaborated aboard a sailboat in Annapolis, Maryland with one very lucky bride. The scene was dramatic which called for drama-makeup and hair.

Makeup: I perfected her skin with Face Atelier Ultra Foundation and smoked out her eyes with MAKE UP FOR EVER’S Flash Colour Palette. A soft lip in Conquest Lip Tar by OCC finished the look.

Hair: The hair had to be a bit dramatic as well but not to over-power the entire look. I teased the hair at the root all over and gently pulled it back into a low chignon. I wanted the hair to be loose yet secure, so I gently picked through the crown of the ‘do with a rat tail comb.

Here are some of the images from the day!

New Work: Beauty Makeup with Sleek Ponytail using Moroccanoil

Lately it seems like you can’t go anywhere without seeing ads for a product called Moroccanoil– the latest in hair care products that comes in a pretty blue package sporting an orange “M” logo.  Question, what really is Moroccanoil?

While backstage at Baby Phat during New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010, I was given a full size bottle of this new hybrid product.  I describe it as “hybrid” because of its finishing shine ability combined with flyaway control with a touch of texturizing serum.  This product can work on all hair types and can be used to shape, smooth, texturize, de-frizz, and much more.  There are endless possibilities for hair styles with this miracle hair care product!

For one of my latest shoots with photographer Nicholas LaClair, I wanted to create a sleek, tight-back ponytail on model Oksana. I immediately grabbed a dab of Moroccanoil, warmed it between my hands, and started to gently coat her hair with the product. Once the pony was set, I warmed another dab of Moroccanoil between my hands to seal the style. The result was a clean pony that was luminescent, healthy looking hair!

New Site Dedicated To Making A Difference

makeitrightIt’s funny, when life gets you down and you think that everyone in the world is out to get you, life changes for the better. You start to realize there’s so much more out there to focus on.  Through some unforseen and unfortunate circumstances, I thought to develop a site dedicated to making a difference in people’s lives: www.BeautyProsMakeItRight.org. This site focuses on Cancer related charities and beauty professionals who are pledging their time and resources into making a difference– beyond the month of October.

There have been some fantastic developments in the short 24 hours it has been live. If you have a chance, check it out! :)

Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign: Products for a Cause

BCAC

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  To promote awareness, Makeup Artist Backstage has gone pink for the remainder of the month!

eveyln_lauder

Paul Baranda, Eveyln Lauder, Jennifer Long, Victoria Stiles

In September, I met with Evelyn Lauder, Senior Corporate Vice President of The Estee Lauder Companies and a co-creator of the Pink Ribbon– a symbol recognized worldwide for its association with Breast Cancer Awareness.  She is passionate about Estee Lauder’s Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign which benefits the Breast Cancer Reasearch Foundation.  The BCRF is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to funding innovative clinical and translational research.  In October 2008, $34.5 million was awarded to 166 scientists across the United States and in Australia, Canada, Latin America, the Middle East, and throughout Europe.  Last year, I wrote this article which explains a little bit about Estee Lauder’s Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation along with the products which benefited the BCRF.  Check out that article on Beyond Beauty Basics for more information on the campaign and fund along with their website www.BCRFCURE.org.

I would like to take a moment to highlight some fabulous products which donate to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. This year the Estee Lauder Companies have put together a long list of products which donate to this wonderful cause. Here are a few of my absolute favorite-must-have items!

Clinique Lipgloss Key Chain

clinique keychainClinique supports BCA Month with an adorable limited-edition Lipgloss Key Chain featuring a signature pink ribbon charm, Clinique “C” charm and three mini Long Last Gloswear SPF 15 in Air Kiss, Kissyfit and Whisper.  Each of these pink shades were chosen in honor of BCA signature color.

Bobbi Brown Pink Ribbon Collection

bobbipinkribboncollectionIn support of BCA Month, Bobbi has created a beautiful limited-edition lip set featuring an exclusive new shade of Creamy Lip Color and a limited-edition Glitter Lip Balm.  To create added awareness of this special cause, the pink ribbon logo has been screened on the Glitter Lip Balm package.  Set comes in a pink photographic carton.

Darphin Arovita C Energic Firming Cream

DarphinThis invigorating, vitamin-enriched Darphin facial cream helps firm skin and fortify its natural resiliency to visibly correct first loss of elasticity of the face and neck.  Key ingredients include:  Artemia salina, Carrot Protein, Noni Extract, Vitamins C and E.

DKNY Be Delicious Fresh Blossom

dknyblossomLighthearted and intensely feminine, this scent is a mix of luscious fruit and delectable flowers.  A scent so innocent, so fresh and playful, it lives up to the Apple Blossom itself, a symbol of love, youth beauty and happiness.

Estee Lauder Elizabeth Hurley Lip Set

lizhurleylipsetThe lip collection shades were hand-picked by Hurley and include a lipstick, lip gloss and pencil.  The lipstick is housed in a smooth pink anodized case that will remind you that you’ve helped support the cause.  The lip collection is packaged in a pink fabric covered, mirrored lipstick holder case.

Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair

advancednightrepairEvelyn Lauder herself told me personally that she uses this product nightly on her face, neck, arms and legs– especially on elbows and knees!  Exclusive Chronolux Technology supports the natural synchronization of skin’s repair and protection processes to help skin look younger.  Over time, you will see a dramatic reduction in visible signs of aging, including lines, dehydration and discoloration.

La Mer Creme de la Mer

lamerThis product saved my face on my recent trip to Chicago.  Going from an event in Miami, where it was warm and humid, to and event in Chicago, a dry cold windy city, left my skin dry and flaky.  One night with this cream on my face saved my skin!  Going into the winter months, this cream is a must-have!  A special pink box has been created especially for BCA Month.

5 Orphans Project Fall Festival Warrenton Virginia

Yes, this is a beauty blog but this event and how it helps children in need is a beautiful thing.

5OP Drew TaylorA friend of mine, Drew Taylor, traveled to Africa in 2007.  For Taylor, this trip turned out to be a life-changing experience.  Most of us are aware of the poverty, lack of medical care, and warp-speed spread of disease such as HIV/AIDS in this part of the world.  We continuously hear statistics such as “34 million orphans in Africa” and “11 million are orphaned by AIDS”.  Through Taylor’s travels, he documented faces and places in Africa affected by this deadly disease.  He put a face to those statistics and, beyond that, has founded a non-profit organization to assist those in need– 5 Orphans Project (5OP).

Be beautiful on the inside as well as out.  If you are in the Northern Virginia area this weekend, check out this Fall Festival which benefits the 5OP. “The hour is late, the need is great, let’s begin!”
