Skin Care: In My Zuca

Lait-Creme-ConcentreSkin care is the basis for every makeup application.  It is important to properly prep skin before applying any sort of cosmetics, particularly foundation.  If the skin is not hydrated prior to blending foundation throughout your face, the makeup can grab on to dry patches and loose skin resulting in a not-so-flawless finish.

Embryolisse 24 Hour Miracle Cream and Embryolisse Eye Contour Treatment are both staples in my Zuca.embryolisse eye contour

The Embryolisse 24 Hour Miracle Cream can act as a foundation primer or even a makeup remover. The 24 Hour Miracle Cream is a rich moisturizer that is not greasy, leaving skin soft and hydrated.

Embryolisse Eye Contour Treatment is a non-greasy eye treatment that has been specially formulated for the fragile area around the eyes. This multi-purpose product acts to improve skin tone, firm skin, and reduce the appearance of small wrinkles and crow’s feet.

Hand Care: Infectiguard Lotion Hand Sanitizer

infectiguard

If dry winter weather is not harsh enough on hands, try washing your hands multiple times per day and sanitizing in between clients!  My hands are the first thing my clients see.  If they are dry, chapped, or even cracked, it can be a turn-off for the people whose faces I apply makeup to!

Infectiguard™, www.infectiguard.com, a new line of skin-friendly lotion-formula hand sanitizers, offers these tips for beautiful hands year-round, even in the harshest of winters and the scariest of flu seasons.   Experts say it’s all about moisture, maintenance and protection.

  • For the love of gloves: Let your hands live a sheltered life.  In winter, wear warm gloves when stepping out into the chilly air.  Always use rubber gloves for housework and dishwashing to protect against drying hot water, chemicals and detergents.   And at the gym, don a pair of training gloves.  These not only wick away sweat, but they cushion your palms and help prevent getting callouses from repeated use of the equipment.
  • Washing: Especially during flu season, washing with soap and water is a necessary evil.   But not all soaps are created equal. Public restroom soaps – including those at your office – are the worst offenders in terms of chemical ingredients.  Consider bringing your own kinder, gentler supply.  An idea to try:  Apartment 5 “Soaps on the Go” soap sheets.
  • Kill germs, not your hands: Hand sanitizers may be de rigueur, but traditional gel formulas don’t do your fingers any favors.  Try Infectiguard’s innovative lotion version.  Moisturizing ingredients like aloe vera and vitamin E make Infectiguard as soft on the skin as it is hard on germs.  You’d never know from the smooth results that the formula contains 62% alcohol – mandated by the Centers for Disease Control to kill bacteria.Cuticles: Perfectly groomed cuticles make your hands the picture of health.  But don’t try cutting yours at home – leave that to experts at the salon.  Instead, try mild manual exfoliation with a washcloth, or with a microexfoliant powder.  Then massage in plenty of cuticle oil.
  • Moisturize and pamper: You simply can’t moisturize your hands too much, especially in winter.   Rub in a rich, shea butter-infused cream a few times a day.  And give your hard-working, computer-weary hands a delightful massage at the same time.  Place a dollop of cream on one palm, lace your fingers together and rub it in with the opposite thumb.   Repeat on the other side, and then massage cream onto the backs of the hands, working it up each individual finger.
  • Manicures: Keep your nails pretty with a salon or at home manicure.  When your nails look good, you’ll have greater incentive to treat them right.

Jergens: A Natural Glow For An All Over Sun-Kissed Look

jergensI recently received an email from a client who had a spray tan disaster.  Her event day was fast approaching so she decided to exfoliate all over to soften the orange glow.  The exfoliation left her skin uneven and splotchy.  Since her event day was right around the corner, I wanted to be careful with advising her.  The last thing I would want her to do is take drastic measures to even out her skin tone!

My suggestion?  Jergens Natural Glow Healthy Complexion Daily Moisturizer UVA/UVB SPF 20.  This product, just $8.99, is complexion protection with a healthy glow.  The moisturizer illuminates skin by combining Erythrulose and DHA to gradually develop a healthy glow.  The one-of-a-kind moisturizer also shields from everyday sun exposure with broad-sprectrum UVA/UVB protection.  Because this product gently enhances skin tone over time, I thought this would be the perfect product suggestion to softly even her skin tone.

Dermatologist-tested, oil-free and non-comedogenic, this product carries the Skin Cancer Foundation seal, meaning the  highly regarded organization considers the formula an effective, powerful sunscreen.

Available in Fair to Medium and Medium to Tan, this product is ideal for use throughout the year!

WHERE TO FIND: Grocery, mass retailers and drugstores nationwide

Diane Kruger At The People’s Choice Awards: Beach Waves Hairstyle by Richard Marin

image001

DIANE CATCHES A WAVE AT THE PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS

Leading lady Diane Kruger hit the red carpet at the 2010 People’s Choice Awards in a curve-hugging Hervé Léger dress and a curvaceous ‘do to match. Celebrity hairstylist Richard Marin let us in on how he created her perfectly undone beach waves in just five easy steps:

  • Start by spraying sea salt texturizer in hair.
  • Blow dry with the diffuser attachment on the Remington Professional Dryer with hair flipped over for maximum image002volume.  Do NOT run your hands through hair while drying as this will cause frizz. Dry 90% of the way and air dry the rest.
  • Next, use the Remington T-Studio Heated-Clip Rollers, alternately curling sections of hair with a 1 inch roller and 1 ¼ inch roller until the entire head is set.
  • Unroll when cool and shake your head around A LOT to tousle the curls.
  • Amp up the volume with a dry spray shampoo, and finish off the look with a spritz of hairspray to control flyaways.  Shake, spray, shake some more, and you’re out the door!

Remington Professional Dryer is available exclusively at Walmart for $50.

Remington T-Studio Heated-Clip Rollers are available at Target and Walmart for $44.99.

TheDailyCollective: Interview With Marc Samson

TDC - MakeupArtistBackstage - Tall Logo

If you are in the business of media production, I suggest you check out www.TheDailyCollective.org. As a freelance makeup artist, I am always searching for new opportunities in my field. TheDailyCollective connects industry professionals like no other site on the web today.

I am thrilled to bring you the first interview about TheDailyCollective with founder, Marc Samson.

What is TheDailyCollective?

TheDailyCollective is a daily, email-based publication focused on source-matching individuals within the photography and filmmaking community. We’ve created a brand new way for professionals to cast for upcoming productions and connect with other creatives whenever there’s a need for collaboration.

We’re completely free and everyone in the industry is encouraged to subscribe and get connected.

What or who inspired you to start TheDailyCollective?

I first envisioned TheDailyCollective about a year ago when I was living in Savannah, Georgia. My friends were SCAD students

Marc Samson

Marc Samson

and through them I witnessed a community with a cooperative and collaborative approach to creating and advancing new arts and film projects.

The networking process there seemed effortless. People organizing projects either already knew the best people for the job, or could just ask a friend (or a friend of a friend) — No more than two or three degrees of separation ever existed between a project organizer and a good fit.

I simply believe the same cooperative spirit can exist on a much larger level, a national or even global level, for the hundreds of thousands of talented people supporting art and film.

Do you have a staff for the site?  If so, who are they and what are their roles?

We’re a community-based publication — our content is almost entirely user-generated, and more than any one person, we have our subscribers to thank for spreading the word about the TheDailyCollective and growing this new community.

What types of professionals are part of TheDailyCollective?

The Daily Collective includes photographers, filmmakers, producers, clothing and costume designers, hair stylists, makeup artists, graphic designers, set designers, models, actors, sound and light specialists, and all others associated directly or indirectly with emerging and established art and film projects.

What benefits do industry professionals receive by signing up for the site?

We have designed a resource that speeds up the networking process and takes the guesswork out of finding legitimate productions and professionals to become involved with.

Issues of TheDailyCollective are sent directly to subscribers’ inboxes and arrive as a simple, plain-text email (no banners, no images and no useless information). This means our subscribers can spend less time searching for new projects and more time working on them. And we think that’s a good thing.

What types of projects does TheDailyCollective accept?

We accept any photography or filmmaking project in need of talent. Some projects offer payment, others are simply collaborative. There are no size requirements and projects can come from established professionals or new entrants working to build their portfolio.

There’s something for everyone in TheDailyCollective.

What is the process for industry professionals to submit a project?

Submitting a project to TheDailyCollective is simple.

1) Head to www.thedailycollective.org

2) Click the “submit project” tab

3) Fill out the form

4) Press submit

And that’s it – your work is done. Once we publish your project, responses will come directly to your email.

What key points should industry professionals keep in mind when submitting a project?

Three things to keep in mind when submitting projects:

1) Make sure to include any and all requirements you have for choosing collaborators

2) You should include a link to your website or portfolio

3) Stay on point and be concise with your request

What are your future goals for TheDailyCollective?

Our goal is to create the industry’s ultimate free casting resource, helping professionals connect quickly and in a simple and more effective way. As our subscriber base grows, we plan to develop regional issues of TheDailyCollective that will focus on major US cities, as well as continue producing a national publication.

Do you have any closing remarks or additional information you would like to share about TheDailyCollective?

TheDailyCollective is a viral, grassroots community working together toward a common goal. We owe a big thanks to everyone spreading the word and helping us by recruiting friends and colleagues to become part of this growing network of amazing potential.

You can subscribe by visiting www.thedailycollective.org.

UNII Palette: Makeup Artist Choice For A Durable Freestyle Palette

As a makeup artist, I consolidate my kit by using palettes. My problem is, I’m very rough with my belongings. I jam pack my kit and treat my Zuca case like a beach ball, constantly tossing the case in the overhead of a plane or train. Thankfully my Zuca case is quite durable. Sad part is, my palettes typically are not. Although the actual eyeshadows usually survive the trips, their cases I store them in do not. I’ve tried a variety of palettes but none of them have survived more than a few months. The main issue is the top breaks off their hinges virtually breaking the palette in two and exposing the product.

I was recently contacted by Minna Ha, Founder of Unii Cosmetics. She created the Unii Palette, a durable (YES DURABLE), thick plastic freestyle palette that you can use to store different cosmetics. Minna was extremely generous and sent me some samples. First off, I was impressed by the thick plastic case– even the hinges are encased in plastic! I’m a color girl so I got absolutely giddy when I opened the package to see the palette is available in a variety of colors– Pomegranate, Twilight, Lemongrass, Eggplant, and Snow. Since the palette is encased in clear plastic, it makes for easy cleaning.  Each palette comes with a case-matching movable magnetic thumb grip– no more slip!

Each UNII Palette Includes:

• Magnetized Palette, so makeup stays put
• Adhesive magnetic sheet with writable labels
• Large, full-sized mirror for the makeup on the go
• Movable thumb grip (a great feature, especially when applying makeup to clients– no slip!)
• Tight, rubberized seal prevents leaks
• Durable and purse-friendly
• Makeup not included

Update 1-21-2010

Minna, creator and founder, contacted me today to let me know the defect was case specific. The buyer had cleaned her palette with alcohol resulting in the plastic becoming dry and brittle. Here are a few tips for palette cleaning:

First, carefully remove the rubber gasket and steel (magnetic) plate at the bottom. Removing these and washing them separately will prevent the steel plate from scratching the paint off of the inner surfaces of the palette. The mirror is not removable. Please do not use chemicals or cleaning products containing isopropyl alcohol, ammonia, chlorine, or abrasive ingredients, and do not use rough towels or cloths to dry the plastic.

The body:
Carefully clean and wipe the palette with a damp soft cloth. Any abrasion or chemicals may result in removal of the paint on the inner surfaces. The mirror can be cleaned with a damp soft cloth, or with a mild soap if needed. Do not dunk your palette in water, doing so might result in water getting stuck behind the mirror.

The gasket:
The rubber gasket can be removed and washed in the sink with mild soap and water. Dry thoroughly before replacing.

The steel:
The steel plate can be wiped down with a damp soft cloth. Make sure to fully dry the steel plate to prevent it from rusting.

Reassembly of your unii palette
Please make sure everything, especially the steel plate, is completely dry before reassembling your palette, because the steel can rust if water or moisture remains trapped between the steel and plastic case. First, carefully place the dry steel plate, painted side facing up. Next, carefully insert the rubber gasket into the groove along the perimeter of the case.

UPDATE 1-17-2010

Although my UNII Cosmetics palette did not show any apparent defects, there were a few batches released of the palettes that were not up to the standards of UNII Cosmetics. Dedicated to providing a quality product, UNII Cosmetics is currently not shipping any more products while they’re ironing out some manufacturing issues.
