Go Blonder by Washing Your Hair

johnfriedablonde

I’m a natural blonde, really I am!  You caught me, I’m not.  Every six weeks, I’m at the salon to conceal my natural brown identity.  During my most recent visit to the bleach dealer, I walked away with roots just a tad warmer than I typically like.  sheerblondegoblonder

The salon was out of the shampoo and conditioner I usually use to ash out the color so, in a pinch, I popped over to CVS and picked up Sheer Blonde Go Blonder Lightening Shampoo and Conditioner by John Frieda. After one wash, my roots were just the way I like them– lighter and brighter!

Whether you’re a natural blonde trying to recapture your baby blonde shade or a color-created blonde looking to recreate that just-colored look or brighten a freshly colored ‘do, this shampoo and conditioner system delivers a subtle all-over lightening effect via an exclusive Lightening Complex and Chamomile. The Lightening Complex includes Lactic Acid, a compound naturally found in hair, to gradually lighten hair by “breaking down” color pigments inside the hair shaft. Combined with a low pH, Lactic Acid also helps to improve the condition of hair by tightening the cuticle and strengthening the hair shaft for improved manageability, body and feel. Because the formulas continue to lighten hair with each use, the shampoo and conditioner should only be used until you reach your desired shade.

The cost is affordable at just $8.99 each and available nationwide at food, drug and mass retailers.

Bumpits: Do They Really Work?

bumpitsWe’ve all seen the infomercial at 2:00AM advertising big hair in minutes through a revolutionary piece of hardware conveniently named Bumpits. But do they really work? How do they stay in place? I’ve got the answer to your burning questions…

First off, yes they do work and quite nicely. They are easy to use when hair is styled around the insert properly. Below are my tips to securing your “bumped up” style!

1) Section hair at the crown of your head.

2) Tease the section of hair at the root just behind, not in front, of the section.

3) Tease the section of hair just below the first section on the top at the root.

4) Spray the roots of both sections with hairspray. I like LOREAL’S Elnett Satin Hairspray.

5) Place the Bumpit at the root in between both sections of hair.  The Bumpit has tiny edges around the base that grip hair.  For extra security, place one bobby pin at the base of the Bumpit in the middle and point the bobby pin downward- not upward through the hair because it would show through.

6) Style hair around the Bumpit using a Mason Pearson Brush, or an equivalent style of brush made to smooth hair.  Spray with hairspray to set the style.

Although this video tutorial is showing you how to do a soft smokey eye, I am wearing the medium sized Bumpit in my hair. :)

Diane Kruger: Red Carpt Updo Style by Richard Marin

DianeKruger1Diane Kruger lit up the red carpet recently with this modern day twist on a classic Hollywood style.  Personally I love the softness of this style.  It’s finished and unfinished but, at the same time, maintains its elegance.   Her hairstylist, Richard Marin, gave me the scoop on four simple steps to re-create this holiday hair DO at home.DianeKruger2

  1. Dry hair with head tilted forward using an ionic dryer for maximum shine and volume (try the Remington Professional Dryer).
  2. Part hair to side.  Using a one inch barrel curling iron, section hair in pieces that are 1½ inches by 3 inches wide. Curl in one direction for a uniform wave pattern, and let curls cool to set.
  3. Brush hair out in a downward motion. Keep brush close to scalp, and finger waves will form.  Brush waves to one side, and secure in side ponytail.
  4. Roll hair into smooth bun with the ends poking out, and pin into place.  Finish with a touch of hairspray and bit of shine spray.  To glam it up like Diane, add a sparkly hair accessory.

The Remington Professional line includes a dryer, one-inch flat iron and two-inch flat iron.

Available exclusively at Walmart; $50 each.

Wedding Makeup: All Aboard Smoky Eyes

Sultry, smoky eyes are my signature look.  Since a teenager, I’ve been intrigued with enhancing eyes.  Maybe because its the first thing guys look at–  trust me ladies, it’s the truth!

For a recent shoot with one of Washingtonian’s top pics for wedding photography, Genevieve Leiper and I collaborated aboard a sailboat in Annapolis, Maryland with one very lucky bride. The scene was dramatic which called for drama-makeup and hair.

Makeup: I perfected her skin with Face Atelier Ultra Foundation and smoked out her eyes with MAKE UP FOR EVER’S Flash Colour Palette. A soft lip in Conquest Lip Tar by OCC finished the look.

Hair: The hair had to be a bit dramatic as well but not to over-power the entire look. I teased the hair at the root all over and gently pulled it back into a low chignon. I wanted the hair to be loose yet secure, so I gently picked through the crown of the ‘do with a rat tail comb.

Here are some of the images from the day!

New Work: Beauty Makeup with Sleek Ponytail using Moroccanoil

Lately it seems like you can’t go anywhere without seeing ads for a product called Moroccanoil– the latest in hair care products that comes in a pretty blue package sporting an orange “M” logo.  Question, what really is Moroccanoil?

While backstage at Baby Phat during New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010, I was given a full size bottle of this new hybrid product.  I describe it as “hybrid” because of its finishing shine ability combined with flyaway control with a touch of texturizing serum.  This product can work on all hair types and can be used to shape, smooth, texturize, de-frizz, and much more.  There are endless possibilities for hair styles with this miracle hair care product!

For one of my latest shoots with photographer Nicholas LaClair, I wanted to create a sleek, tight-back ponytail on model Oksana. I immediately grabbed a dab of Moroccanoil, warmed it between my hands, and started to gently coat her hair with the product. Once the pony was set, I warmed another dab of Moroccanoil between my hands to seal the style. The result was a clean pony that was luminescent, healthy looking hair!

Here are some of our shots:

Hair Now: Herbal Essences Tousle Me Softly Collection

The tousled bed-head look never goes out of style. In fact, this has been a top trend on New York Fashion Week runways for the past two seasons. There is nothing sexier than a full head of bouncing hair! The question on every gal’s mind is how to get those lovely tresses? Herbal Essences saw the need for products to style these tousled ‘dos and created a line specific to this trend.

“In recent seasons, hair styles have gone from beautifully sculpted shapes to loose and natural waves” says Charles Baker Strahan, Herbal Essences Celebrity Stylist. “I consider tousles to be the update to beachy waves– touchable and fully of body, without being crunchy or stiff.  “I love to create tousled styles, as the look is meant to be customized to each woman’s hair type and mood.” Strahan concludes, “The collection has definitely become a must-have in my kit to help create my signature style of loose, perfectly imperfect moments and tousles you can run your fingers through.”

Tousle Me Softly Collection Includes:

- Tousle Me Softly Shampoo
- Tousle Me Softly Conditioner
- Tousle Me Softly Mousse
- Tousle Me Softly Hair Spray
- Tousle Me Softly Spray Gel
- Tousle Me Softly Finishing Cream

Tousle Me Softly Styling Tips:

1.  Prep Wash hair with Tousle Me Softly Shampoo and Conditioner to provide a lightly moisturized base which will set your style.

2.  Product Depending on hair type, apply either Tousle Me Softly Mousse or Spray Gel to DAMP HAIR.

-Fine hair apply Tousle Me Softly Mousse to the roots, working it throughout hair
-Medium to thick hair mist Tousle Me Softly Spray Gel through your hair
-Frizzy hiar or for a little extra conditioning, apply Tousle Me Softly Cream

3.  Style Comb product through your hair with a wide-tooth comb. Lean your head to the side and blow-dry with a basket diffuser to create more volume. Squeeze a flat iron close around a 2″ section of hair and wrap it around the outside. Start in the middle and pull through to the root. Twist the freshly flat-iron curled section with your finger in the direction of the curl to enhance the wave.

4.  Tousle Gently finger through curls. This look is all about creating variation from curl to curl– it’s not supposed to be perfect. Lightly mist hair with Tousle Me Softly Hair Spray to provide a light, flexible hold. Polish off the look with Tousle Me Softly Cream, applied to the ends or to control flyaways.
