Fun In The Sun: Summer Skin Care Tips

It’s summer time, that means time for mosquito bites and sunburns. I have great news, it doesn’t have to be so! Check out my DOs and DON’Ts for healthy summer skin:

DON’T Pull a sunburned Kim Kardashian

DO Shield and Protect

My favorite sunblock comes from Neutrogena. I love their products with “Helioplex” technology which guards your skin against both UVA and UVB Rays. Did you know that UVB Rays can penetrate your car’s windshield? Not only does this product protect you from getting a nasty sunburn, it can help safe guard your skin against harmful Cancer causing rays. Call me crazy but I’m in love with their Age Shield Face 110 SPF. Yep, 110 SPF. My face is as pale as a porcelain doll, but it’s sun-spot and sunburn-free!

DON’T Itch Mosquito Bites

It’s inevitable to get bit every now and again, even with bug spray.  Number one rule, don’t itch!

DO Treat Bites

Treat bites by cooling the skin with an ice pack. If the pain or itching persists, try a topical soothing ointment like Burt’s Bees Bug Bite Relief

Have fun in the sun, but be safe!

Winter Pale Skin: Check out Bare Escentuals Faux Tan

Anyone who is interested in health AND beauty probably struggles with the same dilemma I do with having sun-kissed skin– protection and preservation one’s skin. Having sworn off tanning beds and onto moisturizers with SPF, I have since been on the quest for the perfect sunless tanner.

There are TONS of three step kits out there offering fabulous results usually ranging from the $75-$125 range, which doesn’t seem too bad for 8 oz bottles, except when you consider how much product is necessary for each application and how long each application lasts. Then there is spray tanning which is fabulous for events, but not really affordable at $20-$45 a pop, lasting under a week without extending products which are not included.  Plus you have to factor in the evening of being shiny and avoiding sweating which spray tans require.

I wanted to find the perfect sunless tanner that wouldn’t break the bank, look orange with a reasonable smell. After trying a lot of different products I found one produced by one of my favorite, most-trusted brands: Bare Escentuals Faux Tan is by far the best sunless tanner I have yet to come across. At $22 for 4.5 oz, it’s very affordable. The product is brown but has a green base which helps to avoid the radioactive orange skin that often happens with sunless tanners. The second best part about Faux Tan is the lack of strong tanner smell. It has no trace of of the DHA smell despite it being the second most prevalent chemical in the product. Faux Tan smells sweet from the Almond Oil included in the formula.

Because of the lack of smell, I can use this product in the morning after showering with an exfoliant (any scrub or loofah will do). My suggestion is to put heavy cream on knees, bottoms of feet and elbows before applying. A little goes a long way with Faux Tan. Put on some cheap coloring gloves, start at the bottom, and work your way up working in circular motions being sure to blend. It takes very little time to dry. I can usually dress by the time I’m done with my hair and makeup. Faux Tan blends well. The brown color makes it easy to see where you’ve put it. Make sure all streaks are worked out.

All in all, Faux Tan is a fabulous product that I would recommend to anyone wanting a little color this winter.

Beauty Around The Web: September 4, 2010

make upIt’s time to wear all of our fall makeup! OK, most of us cheated. The makeup introductions for fall are exquisite. How could a self-respecting beauty blogger wait for an arbitrary date like Labor Day? There used to be a rule that we couldn’t wear white after Labor Day! Write in if you still follow it.

Here’s a spin around our favorite beauty blogs to introduce fall – in all of its splendor – and remind us that the best summer favorites are seasonless.

Kari kicked off our fall theme with Five Products for Transitioning to Fall. Head over to Fab over Forty to find her recommendations. How many do you have in your beauty wardrobe?

Gaia took a short break from gorgeous new fall colors (and her incomparable fragrance reviews) to write about a concealer she loves. Gaia knows that we need to prepare our complexions for our beautiful new makeup. She shared her application tips at The Non-Blonde. While you’re there, read about “naked lashes.” Does this fall-winter trend have legs…or eyes?

Anne is celebrating fall beauty with Shiseido! Check out BeautyXposé for a fab feature on Shiseido’s stunning fall collection from Dick Page. Who could resist those eye shadows?

Dolce & Gabbana’s makeup is hard to find. See what Sabrina selected (with help from Nikki at Saks Houston) from the fall collection at The Beauty Look Book. Don’t you love it when you find a great phone friend to help you select the perfect shades? You have to stop by to see Sabrina’s selections.

Charlestongirl wrote a love letter to Edward Bess at Best Things in Beauty. Edward creates makeup with a sense of place, and his irresistible fall colors for cheeks are inspired – and inspiring.

Kelly has been showing us the best of summer at Gouldylox Reviews. Both of her favorite discoveries for cheeks will take you right into fall! See if you can read about H2 Glow Natural Highlighter Cream without placing an order.

M∙A∙C’s new Fabulous Felines Collection for fall has been a blogger darling for weeks, particularly among cat lovers. Get the full scoop on the Superslick Liquid Eye Liners from Marcia at Beauty Info Zone Blog.

Super-shopper Laurie at Product Girl found a darling Clinique gift with purchase at Bloomingdale’s. Clinique has some great looks for fall, including new shades of Vitamin C Lip Smoothies. Why not get a gift when you pick up your favorites? The GWP includes an Allure favorite paring for fall – pink and chocolate.

How are we going to organize all our new purchases? Our pro, Vicki, let us in on her new “secret” at Makeup Artist Backstage.

It’s summer; it’s fall. Enjoy both seasons while you can!

Happy Labor Day weekend! We hope you have a fabulous holiday.

Tragedy struck the fashion world this spring with the news of Alexander McQueen’s death. Butter London nail polish pays homage to him with their new shade All Hail McQueen. Gaia from The Non-Blonde shares her thoughts on this honorary shade.

Are you ready for the Emmy’s this weekend? Anne from BeautyXposé is giving us easy to use at-home tips on how to get a gorgeous white smile, just like the ones we’ll see on the Emmy’s red carpet.

Do you want to make your pores and fine lines disappear? We all want that flawless face before applying makeup and Kelly from Gouldylox Reviews shares with us a Jouer product that gives her that flawless look.

We love products that give us a flawless face, but sometimes we need to learn how to use the products to get the look we want. Makeup artist Victoria Stiles will be doing “Flawless Faces Web Series”. See Makeup Artist Backstage to learn about the series.

What are some of the hot color trends this fall? Purple is one of them, and Kari from Fabulous Over Forty shares with us some of her favorite purple beauty products. Could there be a purple in your future?

The economy may be putting us in a grey mood, but Sabrina from The Beauty Look Book shows us all things beautiful in grey. From nail polish to handbags and everything in between, there’s a grey you may fall in love with!

Sadly, there have been times when we’ve all overdone it in the sun. Carla from Product Girl tested a Caudalie product for her sunburn. Did she get the relief she needed?

Weekend Beauty Roundup – August 20, 2010

iStock_000012937335XSmallBeauty companies are dazzling us with new makeup introductions, effective skin care, fabulous fragrances, and new shades for our nails – all kinds of temptations to spend money to be gorgeous! Check out the must-haves that made us swoon this week.

Chanel can make your heart race. Kari’s pulse quickened when she saw the Inimitable Intense display of new Chanel eye shadows and mascaras. You should visit Fab over Forty before you leave home. A trip to the Chanel counter may be in your future.

Gaia used the term “perfect” to describe Edward Bess Forever Yours Ultra Sleek Lipstick. If you want to see how “perfect” looks, head over to The Non-Blonde. Of the 13 shades available, she was able to limit herself to just four. Such willpower! It’s also noteworthy that she found a jasmine she likes!

Sabrina at The Beauty Look Book is another Edward Bess fan. You’ll want to see her complete review, along with lots of photos, of his Compact Rouge.

Kelly has a new lip addiction. Tom Pecheux is shaking up Estée Lauder. He rocked Kelly with the new Pure Color Gloss. She modeled her lovely shade selections at Gouldylox Reviews.

Charlestongirl is already in the holiday spirit, thanks to Shiseido! The Makeup 2010 Holiday Collection Essential Elegance Palette, created by Dick Page, left her gushing at Best Things in Beauty.

At BeautyXposé, it was all about REN Replenishing Treatment Mists (and darling flats for fall). Find out why Pamela has been obsessed, spritzing with glee.

Let’s not forget our hands! Laurie at Product Girl gave us a peek at Essie’s Fall 2010 collection, nail colors to complement the season’s fashion trends.

While we’re on the subject of hands, Marcia and Lisa featured an interview with Ellen Sirot, a world-famous hand model! If you visit Beauty Info Zone Blog, you’ll find a special discount on Ellen’s Hand Perfection products to keep your hands in tip-top shape.

To end our tour on an upbeat, jazzy note, head over to Makeup Artist Backstage and watch the short video on Washington’s style setters (“housewives” and party crashers aren’t DC’s only claim to fame). Victoria worked to beautify this year’s shoot.

You’ll want to drop in on our beauty blogger friends every day over the next few weeks. The beauty world is hopping!
