Backstage Beauty: Fashion On Fulton Benefiting Brooklyn Community Housing

Last night was the 8th Annual Fashion On Fulton event benefiting Brooklyn Community Housing. Each year BCHS provides safe and clean supportive housing for 700 formerly homeless women, children and men. The organization helps them learn how to live productively and independently, with dignity and hope. In 1978, a group of concerned citizens and local clergy founded BCHS to address the growing crisis of homelessness. The agency established one of the country’s first Scatter-Site apartment programs, then developed a range of groundbreaking programs that have since helped thousands of people move from crisis and isolation to independence and community.

The event showcased a host of Brooklyn designers. Organized by India-Jewel Jackson of Chic Creative with Social Media/P.R. coordination by Lianne Farbes of TheMakeupGirl.net, designers included BrooklynJunior.com, Better Than Jam, Trudy Miller Layers, and  Still Hip.

Backstage at the event, hair styling was provided by the Vince Smith Hair Experience Salon with makeup by me joined by a team of talented artists, Christopher Milone, Brandalyn Fulton, Rhiannon Babson, and DeShae Mayrand.

5 Orphans Project Fall Festival Warrenton Virginia

Yes, this is a beauty blog but this event and how it helps children in need is a beautiful thing.

5OP Drew TaylorA friend of mine, Drew Taylor, traveled to Africa in 2007.  For Taylor, this trip turned out to be a life-changing experience.  Most of us are aware of the poverty, lack of medical care, and warp-speed spread of disease such as HIV/AIDS in this part of the world.  We continuously hear statistics such as “34 million orphans in Africa” and “11 million are orphaned by AIDS”.  Through Taylor’s travels, he documented faces and places in Africa affected by this deadly disease.  He put a face to those statistics and, beyond that, has founded a non-profit organization to assist those in need– 5 Orphans Project (5OP).

Be beautiful on the inside as well as out.  If you are in the Northern Virginia area this weekend, check out this Fall Festival which benefits the 5OP. “The hour is late, the need is great, let’s begin!”
