New Work: Hair Styling and Elevate Artists Workshop with Daven Mayeda

As a makeup artist, I believe in continuing education in order to grow and excel in your craft. The minute you stop absorbing information and new techniques, is the minute your career stops. By closing your mind, you are literally putting up your own road block to success.

For photo shoots, I am a makeup artist first, “light” hairstylist second. I have been styling hair for a few years, mainly on-set and for small events. When I heard Daven Mayeda, hairstylist to Mariah Carey, would be making himself available at a workshop for on-set and editorial hairstyling through Elevate Artists in Washington D.C., I jumped on the chance to absorb information from this master stylist!

Unfortunately I cannot go into detail on his techniques because they were exclusive to our class, but I can tell you the two day hands-on workshop was worth every penny, and more! What made all the difference in the world was the fact this wasn’t just a seminar, it was hands-on. We each had a mannequin head and access to products and tools that we may not have already had in our kit. Stand-out key items used at the workshop were from the T3 line of tools and Oribe Hair Care Products.

Because I did not want to “lose” any of the information I learned, the first thing I did was set up a test shoot so I could put my new techniques in action. My good friend and editorial portrait photographer, Nicholas LaClair, made some time out of his incredibly hectic schedule to help me out with my personal project. DeShae Mayrand, makeup artist, hair stylist, and fellow workshop attendee, assisted me during the shoot (thank you!!!). Her husband swung by, as well, and assisted Nick with setting up lights, backdrop, and props. And my husband stopped by with a six pack of beer!

Here’s our end result with model Chelsea Taylore….

Photographer: Nicholas LaClair
Hair and Makeup: Victoria Stiles
Hair and Makeup Assistant: DeShae Mayrand
Helping Hands and Beer Drinkers: Marc Mayrand and Dan Stiles
Location: Leiper Stiles Studio
Special Thank you to Daven Mayeda and Elevate Artists

Lela Rose: Renaissance Mayflower Hotel Washington DC

lelarose

Last night’s Lela Rose fashion show, presented by the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC was not your run-of-the-mill fashion show. Although models did strut their stuff down a catwalk modeling some of the finest spring fashions in town, there was a general camaraderie among patrons at the Modus Union 2010 event– something non-existent at similar large scale shows.

Maybe it had something to do with the reason why we dressed to impress in the first place? Founded by Mary Amons in 2006, Labels for Love, the reason that brought out DC’s power players last night, benefits 501(c)3 charitable organizations that protect women and children from the damaging effects of poverty, homelessness, abuse, and the hardships associated with terminal illness. The beneficiary for last night’s event was the Children’s National Medical Center. Children’s National Medical Center is a proven leader in the development of innovative new treatments for childhood illness and injury.

Sponsors for this event included Celebrity Stylist Ted Gibson, who re-created his “water” themed ponytail beach hair from the Lela Rose show in New York last fall for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week S/S 2010 (see my video below), and makeup by Dior Beauty. Other sponsors included Cadillac, PHYTO, O’Neill Studios, the aba agency, T.H.E. Artist Agency, Secure Limo USA, and Bake Shop.

Ted Gibson for Lela Rose– Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week S/S 2010

The foyer was elaborately decorated with works of art by Lolly Amons, Roxanne Christie, Maggie O’Neill, Don Patron, Rodger Schultz, Matt Sesow, and Karen Suderman. 100% of sales from art pieces went to the event’s beneficiary.

New Work: Beauty Makeup with Sleek Ponytail using Moroccanoil

Lately it seems like you can’t go anywhere without seeing ads for a product called Moroccanoil– the latest in hair care products that comes in a pretty blue package sporting an orange “M” logo.  Question, what really is Moroccanoil?

While backstage at Baby Phat during New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010, I was given a full size bottle of this new hybrid product.  I describe it as “hybrid” because of its finishing shine ability combined with flyaway control with a touch of texturizing serum.  This product can work on all hair types and can be used to shape, smooth, texturize, de-frizz, and much more.  There are endless possibilities for hair styles with this miracle hair care product!

For one of my latest shoots with photographer Nicholas LaClair, I wanted to create a sleek, tight-back ponytail on model Oksana. I immediately grabbed a dab of Moroccanoil, warmed it between my hands, and started to gently coat her hair with the product. Once the pony was set, I warmed another dab of Moroccanoil between my hands to seal the style. The result was a clean pony that was luminescent, healthy looking hair!

Here are some of our shots:
